Summer 2014

Dear Members,

Recently, a colleague and I conducted our organization's first ever fraud awareness training. I drew upon FAR's January educational program where an investigator, a lawyer, and a recent victim shared their unique perspectives.

I recently attended a FAR breakfast meeting hosted by incoming board member Bill Grubb. This was our third nonprofit member breakfast in as many months. The topic was non-dues revenue but, as they usually go, it was a dynamic discussion. We touched on certification programs, AMS implementations, taxes, foreign subsidiaries, office relocations, healthcare, collaborative procurement, and several other subjects. I even learned that garbage trucks are prone to catching fire! Thanks, Steve.

As you can probably tell, FAR has become my number one resource. I find myself digging through the FAR archives for content on a regular basis. More importantly, I call FAR members to draft off their unique experiences and insights.

As we take a summer break, we're headed for an exciting new year of programming. At September's luncheon, John Spence will provide a dynamic keynote on leadership. You may want to take the afternoon off. He'll give a bonus, post-luncheon workshop on corporate culture. Members will share budget best practices in October. In November, we'll give you the latest technology ideas that you can use. Plan to attend at least one of the three breakfast meetings this fall. It's a great way to dive into the details and walk away with useful ideas that you didn't expect.

In September, David Keen will be your Chair and lead our expanded board. It has been an honor to serve. Once again, I congratulate all the FAR board and committee members for their varied and meaningful contributions during a successful year. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

FAR Board Members Ready for New Adventures
As new board members transition on, a few transition off. These FAR members have helped guide and form our organization over the years during their respective terms. We thank you for your contributions and dedication to the Finance and Administration Roundtable!

Patricia Adkins Headshot
Patricia Adkins, MBA
Patricia has been instrumental on the FAR board, serving as Program Chair for 3 years, and especially in recent years as our Chairman from 2012-2013. Most recently, in her role as Immediate Past Chair, she led the Nominating & Leadership Development Committee which implemented the first plan for the newly added leadership development component.  FAR now has an enhanced nominating process and guidance for leadership development, diversity and succession planning.

"It has been a privilege to serve FAR and contribute to its ongoing success.  Most of all, I have gained more than I have given because of exceptional people with whom I've worked, the friendships I've made, and the knowledge and life lessons shared.  FAR will always hold a special place in my heart."

Steve has served two, 2-year terms on the FAR board contributing to the decisions that have shaped it in recent years which include our updates last year to the Resource Member membership structure.

"I was fortunate to serve on the board and see the endless dedication and passion by so many that makes FAR a unique and rewarding experience.  For all those that have served - thank you.  For those that have not, I encourage you to consider the opportunity.  I look forward to seeing you all at the regular meetings."

Paul has served two, 2-year terms on the FAR board and was the co-chair on the Communications Committee providing recommendations on how to better communicate with our members and to make our organization known to the nonprofit community.

"There is no better organization than FAR for providing top-notch educational and networking opportunities for the finance and administration professional.  The commitment of FAR members, both resource and not-for-profit, to the betterment of the NFP community has always amazed me.  It has been a distinct honor to service my peers on the FAR Board of Directors these past four years.  I hope that in some small way I made a difference."

FAR is Out and About!

The FAR brand is now visible at more venues where nonprofit finance and business professionals are present, such as - the annual GWSCPA Symposium, the CFO of the Year, the CEO of the Year, Association Trends "Live" and CEO Update "Live."

Recently, FAR debuted its first exhibit at ASAE's Finance, Human Resources and Business Operations Conference (FHRBOC) from May 28 - 29 at the Washington Convention Center.  Members introduced FAR to over 500 attendees, shared information about the value of membership, and re-engaged former members.  Thanks to Jack Deeds, National Cooperative Business Association, Margaret Meleney, Club Managers Association of America, and Patricia Adkins, FAR Leadership Chair, for staffing the event.
Finance Professionals: Find More Money to Support Your Organization's Mission
By: Jack Deeds, CPA; Wade Tetsuka, CPA
As a finance executive, you look for additional ways that you can add value to your organization.  More money and resources to support the Mission are a win.  One area that is largely overlooked is the role that credit and purchasing card transactions (Visa/MasterCard/AMEX) play in the expense and revenue stream of your Association, Not-For-Profit Organization (NFP) or Non-Government Organization (NGO). FAR's Family is Growing

The FAR family has been growing in recent months. Our newest members:

Nicole Miller, Corporate Manager Director, Savills Studley (Gold Member) and her husband, Mike, welcomed Holden Justin Miller to their family on July 10, 2014 weighing approximately 7 lbs. and measuring about 20 in. Nicole reports the family is doing well enjoying being together this summer.

Christine Cardinal, Senior Vice President, Not-For-Profit Banking Group, Capital One Bank (Gold Member), her husband, daughter and son welcomed their newest addition, Brennan Lucien Cardinal, to the family December 2013.

Congratulations to both Nicole and Christine and their families!
FAR Luncheons

FAR members consider the SunTrust Building space we use monthly as our "home". However, we often require larger space for special events, like our "Change of Pace" luncheons.

If you know of a venue that would accommodate our FAR family and guests for those events, and is Metro accessible, please contact Christina at hq@far-roundtable.org.

Please include the venue name, website, pricing, amenities, point of contact (if you have it), and any other information you may have.
Get Involved!

FAR members are the best asset we have - to keep our organization strong, member involvement is encouraged! If you have time and energy to donate to FAR, consider joining a committee this year. Information on the committees can be found on the FAR website or by contacting hq@far-roundtable.org.
