"Employment Issues Facing FAR Members"

Organization staffing - planning, recruiting, and retaining - raises complex issues that require new solutions with every change in demographics and legal requirements. The February program focused on changes in Employment Law that impact employers throughout the region. Art Herold, Hugh Webster and Jim Wilson spoke from the legal community while Julie Boynton presented the perspective of the HR specialist.
Together they put more than a dozen changes in front of the audience. Some were new approaches to policies such as telecommuting, performance evaluations and termination while others were new legal obligations that included DC's transit benefit requirement, questions on interviews and applications and the Wage Transparency Act. In a few cases they alerted members to initiatives such as the DC Family Leave Act that is still being drafted in its final form.
The panel also addressed specific questions from the audience, submitted in advance or from the floor. In addition to clarifying the legal requirements around each issue, the panel gave counsel for HR Directors on what they need to do now to avoid legal actions against them. Foremost is the careful drafting and frequent updating of the employee handbook. Setting clear expectations of benefits, performance evaluations and whistle blower policies, for example, can reduce the organization's liability. Increasing the frequency of performance evaluations is another. Giving frequent feedback-positives and negatives - using digital apps meets the millenials' needs for feedback and gives all employees the chance to change behavior when it's needed. And on telecommuting: with a formal, written agreement of do's and don'ts, clear definitions of eligibility for telecommuting and the nature of the work performed, a focus on performance results and training for supervisors, telecommuting can be a win/win for your organization and for your employees.
With several issues still being discussed and others sure to surface in the near future, keeping up with the requirements and sharing best practices need to be uppermost in HR offices and the executive suites of FAR members.
